When were you diagnosed with SBC?
November 2020
How were you diagnosed with SBC?
I was diagnosed with primary breast cancer in April 2020. I had a mastectomy followed by chemotherapy then just as I was coming towards the end of my treatment a bone scan showed I had secondary breast cancer in my spine , I had an MRI and PET scan which showed it was also in my sternum and pelvis
What has been your treatment Journey?
I had a mastectomy and 7 rounds of chemotherapy and then when I got my secondary diagnosis I started Zoladex and Letrazole to suppress my hormones and a targeted cancer treatment called Ribocyclib I also had 15 rounds of radiotherapy to my breast , armpit and collarbone areas . I also swim in the sea ! Not a conventional treatment but I absolutely love it and it has been amazing for my mental health . I had a scan in March which showed my cancer is currently stable.
What would have helped make your journey so far easier?
I was not told anything about Secondary Breast cancer when I was diagnosed with primary , I didn’t even know it was a “thing” ! I think there needs to be more information and awareness around it.
What advice would you give someone who has just received their diagnosis?
The first few weeks are definitely the worst but once you have all the facts and a treatment plan in place you will feel better. Don’t get hung up on statistics ! Most of them are very out of date and are just averages . At the start my oncologist said to me “ You are not average !” and I always try to remember that ! Having a sense of humour and surrounding yourself with people who bring you joy also helps !
